Bush to be "forced" to close GITMO?

Sun Jun 29, 2008 at 09:09:04 AM PDT

M$NBC is reporting that a recent SCOTUS ruling is going to result in the imminent closure of Guantanamo Bay or "GITMO".  They think that Bush will be "forced" to "make a decision" before the 2008 Elections, guaranteeing that the decision is milked for all the political value it has.

Ditching the legal background and cutting to the chase, GITMO becomes, of course, another political football:

McCain wants the prisoners tried at military commissions, or war crimes courts, which are allowed under a 2006 law that he supported. These commissions act as criminal courts run by the U.S. armed forces to try those considered enemies during wartime. So far, 19 Guantanamo detainees have been charged in such commissions.

*****

Obama, the presumed Democratic nominee, said he would close Guantanamo and move the detainees to both civilian and military facilities in the United States, including Leavenworth, according to campaign spokesman Reid Cherlin. Obama wants the detainees to be tried in federal criminal courts or in military courts martial.

The Admiral in the story is quoted as saying the closing GITMO is easier said than done because some of the people there really are dangerous.

They can be no more dangerous than murderers and serial killers and those sorts of entities do fine in a regular high-security facility like Leavenworth or Marion, Illinois.

The military just doesn't want to close it because they, for whatever reason, HAVE to be able to violate people's rights and to torture them without any consequences.

There is a very interesting statement in the article:

"We are making concerted efforts to decrease the population at Guantanamo," said Navy Cmdr. Jeffrey Gordon, a Pentagon spokesman. "We have no desire to be the world's jailers, as we have often stated."

Interesting in that we already are the largest jailer of people in the entire world, not just the so-called "free world", already Number 1 in 2002 witha prison population of over 2 million people, which was 6 very long Bush-filled years ago. 1% of this country is in jail, prison or on parole/probation.

So it's an interesting statement, my polite snarky euphamism for hollow lie, that America doesn't want to be the world's jailer. It clearly wants to be the world policeman, Judge, and jury. So I think it's just a hollow statement made to appease people who rightfully criticize the existence of a de facto concentration camp on American soil. (We lease it, it's American.)

GITMO is also synonymous with torture. All manner of torture has been visited on those incarcerated there, innocents as well as the few true problems they have managed to catch in one piece. People are being tortured there now as we read this.

Obama HAS to push the regular prison system solution. The people there, however horrible, need to have proper trials.

If they really are half as bad as the completely incredible liars in the US Military and Federal Government wish for us to believe they are, then there is likely some standard bad things these people have done that is documented in a conventional manner.

All the State Secret bullshit they are constantly throwing up cannot be legitimate: it just can't. The people who populate the Bush Administration, without known exception, are liars. They would not be working for Team Bush is they were not dishonest.

It begs belief to try to imagine a person actually accepting a position with this Administration who is not wholly-committed to hyper-lying and catapulting the propaganda. It's just not realistic or mature to give other theories much consideration.

Jimmy Carter thinks it should be closed and converted into a museum dedicated to remembrance of the importance of the Geneva Conventions.

Why did we have those conventions anyway? What happened that people felt it was necessary to write them up to protect people from torture?

Team Bush has continued the work of those who caused the Geneva Conventions to be drafted in the first place - it is most fitting that Team Bush has been the group to successfully undo them.

Team Bush is the most recent manifestation of that undesirable human path we thought was stamped out in 1945.

This is why GITMO MUST be closed and why SOMETHING has to be done by America to repudiate this crap before the world.
